Microsoft Vista

Every new technology that comes up new or picks up and gets hot will definitely have some resistance and criticisms highlighting the disadvantages. I mean what’s the point if it is not there, in a way resistance and criticism adds more visibility. I am sure you would agree there would be equal number of people who constantly criticize Microsoft against who back it. Whenever Microsoft releases something new people equally look for sites that bring out the negative aspects of it.  I am sure you might have heard Microsoft has released the much awaited release candidate version of Vista operating system.  Here are some links that I had been reading in the recent on Vista.

I am sure there will be more to come.

The web is spreading its wings

The web is trying to reach the nuke and corner of world. A recent article “Broadband in the Amazon” in EcoGeek reveals the availability of internet in a high school inside the deep Amazon. Availability of internet to schools is a must in this era as internet is the most powerful tool that can bring rich information at your fingertips with just a few clicks.  It can unfold the earth and show how vast, deep and diversified it has become.  It is easily countable what information is not available in the net than what is.  And providing an interface to the children in schools to access the internet can really be very useful.

Ironically as I am writing this post a devil inside me laughs out reminding me that I have been struggling to get a broadband connection at home here in Bangalore. None of the providers seem to provide service in the street where my apartment is even though it is a prime location in the city.

Storage - Where did we come from and where are we headed?

I still remember when I was doing my pre college (11th grade in Indian context) I bought a 640K floppy drive and I still have it with me as an item to remember. 640K is quite small compared to the Giga Bytes of storage that a DVD ROM offers now. But we came a long way with what we have now.  Here is a history of data storage from where we started, where we are now and what’s next.

Foundation Stone #18 - Never be content so easily

Thanks to my friend Senthil who pointed me to this good blog article “Why being a glass half empty person is a good thing.” from Rubber Sole. Being optimistic is ok but being never content with what has been achieved and the thirst for more is what keeps you learn more and grow. I had this wonderful teacher named Sridhar when I did a computer diploma course 12 years back in a training institute called NIIT. He once told the class that one should be like a tiger when it comes to achieving. A tiger once it gets to taste human flesh becomes a man-eater and would always be hungry for human flesh. The first achievement, be it something small is good enough to kindle that man-eater in you for more achievement. The mental appetite to achieve more should be something similar - never be satisfied and there is always something new to learn, improve and to achieve more. As technology changes and advancements are so rapid it is very important that one has that thirst for more mindset, otherwise it will be all the more difficult to cope up, and more than that it will be difficult to stand out in the infinite IT crowd. The blog article ends with a beautiful quote from George Bernard Shaw and I want to repeat it here.

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Object Oriented Thought Process

Matt Weisfeld author of “Object Oriented Thought Process” has been posting a series in developer.com based on excerpts taken from his book.  Object thinking is very important as most of us today are claiming that we are object oriented developers but how far are we really doing object oriented programming is questionable.  Understanding Object oriented concepts are easy if they can be properly correlated with our interaction with objects in the real time world. Matt Weisfeld has beautifully done that in this book with good examples and is a definitive guide to any developer who sincerely wants to learn and apply the object oriented programming concepts in the true sense.

My other posts on Object Thinking.

When was the last time you wrote on a paper and pen?

Couple of days back I read an interesting article “Give it a big hand “on the local newspaper The Hindu. I had to question myself “When was the last time I wrote on a paper?”, other than taking notes during meetings which were scribbling few words and then once I am back to my seat my hands are back to the keyboard.  Thinking deeper the last time I wrote on paper was a letter to the cellular provider in Chennai to deactivate my account as I had to shift to Bangalore. As the article points out kids these days have more exposure to computers very early on and this could definitely have a side effect on the hand writing skills. The worst part is kids will also have difficulty in spelling words as they use the spell check programs. And I also have felt the more use of computers it becomes difficult to all of sudden write on paper, particularly in the Indian context of writing exams where its more essay type answers. It becomes important that parents take the additional responsibility of helping their children with when to use computers for what and when to stick on to the habit of writing using pen and paper.

Microsoft’s home of the future

Just as I posted about “The next big things on web” just three days back, I am seeing this technology video “Making Your Home Easy to Use” in abc.com wherein Microsoft is demonstrating its new consumer product which might dominate the future of digital home. In action you can see the “collaborate, cooperate, complement and work together” concept.

Happy weekend!
